The CologneApart is located in a prime city centre location with a view of the Cologne Cathedral and within walking distance of the old town and the main railway station. The former mail distribution centre, designed by Joachim and Margot Schürmann in 1980 and awarded the German Architecture Prize in 1991, will be revitalised by autumn 2021. Under the brand name “Vertical Village”, an innovative building with modern underground parking, attractive commercial space as well as space-optimised and multifunctional apartments is being created. A characteristic feature of this cuboid property is the terraced floor levels that extend to the inside of the block, which are designed up to the first floor and thus create natural light in the building core.

      Why CologneApart?

      Vorgesehen ist nach städtebaulichem Konzept eine markante Überbauung des Alexandra-Stiegs, mit bis zu siebzehngeschossigen Türmen am Elbufer. Der Raum zwischen den Gebäuden wird nach oben offen unter Anpassung an das stark abfallende Geländeniveau zur Wasserseite gestaltet und soll mit einem Parkdeck die Stellplätze aufnehmen. Der Freiraum zwischen den Gebäuden wird hochwertig gestaltet. KFZ-Einstellplätze werden in halboffener Basement-Ebene geschaffen.

Its signifi cance as a major transport hub is evident today in the extensive long-distance passenger railway system and the Eifeltor trans-shipment station, one of the largest container handling stations for combined freight transport. The infrastructure is complemented by four inland ports and an international airport.
